PROJECT: Drilling and Development of a Community Borehole to Improve Access to Safe Water, Including Sanitation and Hygiene Education
A Drop of Hope, in partnership with The Student Water Project, is seeking CAD $25,000 for drilling and developing a sustainable community borehole in Mosensema subcounty, Kisii County, Kenya. The project aims to improve access to safe and reliable water for ~ 5,000 people, including learners and staff at Mosensema Secondary School, Rianyabayo Memorial Academy, and Mosensema Primary School, as well as surrounding households. Currently, the community relies on potentially contaminated hand-dug boreholes, springs, and streams, which may dry up during extended dry seasons and force residents to travel more than one kilometre to collect water. The project will involve technical assessments, borehole drilling, pumping and storage infrastructure, water-quality testing, and installation of an appropriate ultraviolet (UV) water-treatment system. It will also provide sanitation and hygiene education, promote safe water handling, and establish community-led operation and maintenance arrangements. By reducing dependence on potentially unsafe water sources and improving water availability for drinking, handwashing, cleaning, and sanitation, the initiative seeks to strengthen public health, support school attendance and learning environments, and enhance long-term water security for the beneficiary community.
ONGOING PROJECT: Provision of safe water, and Sanitation & Hygiene Improvement at Rianyabayo Memorial Academy, Kisii County, Kenya
This project brings together The Student Water Project, a Canadian NGO, and A Drop of Hope an NGO in Kenya to expand the existing rainwater harvesting and treatment system at Rianyabayo Memorial Academy. The system was designed by Dr. Paul Onkundi Nyangaresi, with funding support from Dr. Sara Beck of the University of British Columbia through Mitacs, and industry partnerships with Clear Inc. and MW Technologies in Canada. However, growing student enrolment has increased water demand beyond the system’s current capacity. In addition, deteriorating toilet facilities and inadequate handwashing stations expose students and staff to increased health risks. The project will address these challenges by expanding access to safe water and improving sanitation and hygiene facilities to support a healthier school environment.
